This is the second advert for the 30 Seconds To Mars album,
This Is War. This advert is that for the second release of the album which came
out after the from an initial look it is obvious that the advert is very basic
with a simple colour scheme. In 2010, when the album was released, there was a
range of album covers for the same album. The most common of the covers was the
tiger head, however, on initial release, the album covers were of fans’ faces,
which also featured the likes of Kat Von D and Bam Margera.

Upon looking we immediately notice the ‘WAR’, which takes
over most of the advert. War, could be considered as a taboo subject, as it is
something we know is going on but not many people speak openly about it. This
could have been a deliberate tactic to make a person look to see what the
advert is about as war is not something that is often advertised.
The album cover that they have used on the advert was not
the most popular of those released, however was the album with the most basic
colour scheme, which has ben continued through the whole advert. Black, red and
white have been the colours used, which has links to the logos they have used
throughout the life of the band.
This also ties in with the colour of the ‘Virgin Records’ label logo too. The
consistent colour scheme keeps the advert looking professional as the use of
too much colour when not relevant gives the impression that the advertisers
don’t know what they were doing.
30 Seconds To Mars use their own iconography throughout
their album artworks, posters, adverts and videos. The triad and echelon symbols
are those who are familiar with 30 Seconds To Mars will instantly recognise. I
know myself, as a fan of the band, would easily recognise one of their adverts,
even if it had no mention of the band. This is just through their constant use
of the triad symbol, ‘provehito in altum’
and logos.
The triad symbol has been placed in the background of the
advert so there is enough room for text. The text starts with the capitalised
heading: ‘ALL NEW CD & DVD DELUXE EDITION REPACKAGE’, which is in a larger
text and bolder than the text that follows. By doing this, we are drawn towards
exactly what the advert is advertising.
The text below gives details of what is included on the
album and what makes it different to the previous release earlier on in the
year. Bold is used again to draw attention to certain details, including the
larger and bolder text for ‘Kanye West’, which could bring more attention to
the advert, him being an illustrious artist.
To finish the text, the advert uses ‘OUT NOW’ to show that
the album is currently out to buy now. This is situated at the bottom section
of the triad symbol, which seems to frame the text.
