blessthefall are an American Metalcore band that have a general audience of teenagers, particularly girls. The music video is different to the other videos, as it is not heavily based on live music performances from the band. An example of a music video from blessthefall that uses lots of performance, and particularly meet shot.
The
song, 40 days, is featured on the album ‘Awakening’ which has a dark themed
album artwork. For the genre of music, the digipak doesn’t fit in with the
common conventions of a Metalcore album but more that of a gothic music genre.
‘blessthefall’ have used an album font that is used throughout all of their
album covers (excluding the newest release ‘Hollow Bodies’). The album cover shows a woman bursting out of
water with a small vintage pocket in her hand. It could imply that it is her
time to break free, like a new lease of life. This could be a connotation of
the album title ‘Awakening’. A vignette effect adds to the atmosphere of
the album cover and title, changing what may be a bright and elegant picture,
so something with an eerie darkness. The band’s font for ‘blessthefall’ is in the style of a handwritten script font, which
allows there to be a consistent, them of traditional vintage throughout their
album covers. In a previous album there is an image of old decaying stone
stairs leading up to the clouds. This album cover also incorporates the same
font and the vignette effect.
As a way to compare we
looked at the album covers from the band Escape The Fate who are of similar
genre. From this album cover we can see the band member from Escape The Fate
who has had their faces digitally manipulated. The digital manipulation on
their faces as made them have a broken flesh appearance. This style of album
cover is something that is common in other album covers of the same genre of
music and shows how much different the blessthefall album is to others of the
genre. The album cover has a very dark black background which is a colour
associated with the Metalcore genre.
This album cover could be seen to have an intercontextual reference to
the Bohemian Rhapsody music video as the cover follows the same style.
