Light Digipak Analysis

This album cover triangle to the left shows that not all rock album covers are black and grim like what some people stereotype the rock genre to be. Most of these album covers are debuts of this band, and this could show that bands aren’t interested in the clique dark and dingy look anymore. In our opinion, bands do mellow because they realize that they can get more airplay on radios and TVs if their music isn’t as loud and heavy, and the rock genre is a acquire taste it’s not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’, although this is just our opinion. You could also argue that people are more attracted to the light and airy covers, for example the Yellow cover in the middle of this triangle, will standout more than others because of its vibrant colour. This may attract more people to buy it, unlike the clique black music covers. They, the customer, could also think that this album cover reflected the music on the inside, they may think that it was going to be ‘uplifting and enlighten’ when it could be not what they were after, but they were perceived by the colour of the cover.

Although, I don’t think in all cases that the album always represents what the band is saying, or the message that it written within the album. Such as the Sleeping with Sirens Free album artwork (2nd Top Left) it’s a plain feather on a white background, I don’t see the links between this and their songs. However the Lower than Atlantis album cover, of the hands shows so much. It represents how they’ve got nothing and if you look closely you’ll see how they have a 1p coin, this was does represent that they wanted to achieve i.e. growing a band from nothing to everything like that they’ve done.

There has been a lot of controversy about the Falling in Reverse Fashionably late album cover. This is one shocked everyone in the fact that, the album cover only displays one band member, even though the band have five members. Admittedly, the person that is displayed is the most popular as he has been in previous bands and he’s very controversial and unique.  This man is Ronnie Radke, I can’t help thinking that having himself on the album cover was going to make him standout from the crowd, and more people would recognize him from news reports etc. This album doesn’t have the band’s name on it, this is probably because he’s that egotistic that he feels that he doesn’t need the band’s name and people should instantly recognise him and know what band he’s from. He likes to think of himself as a one-man band, and that he’s that independent in his music that he doesn’t need anyone else to make him famous, even though he’s famous for all the wrong reasons. The album cover is very white, and he wears black so that people who look at the album cover will be looking at him only, this is probably what he want to believe. As you can probably tell by our informality, we am not a fan of this album/digipak at all, as Ronnie’s ‘white boy swagger’ is enough to turn everyone off. His ego shines through in the music and in the artwork, as simple as the digipak looks, it does lack in creativity and we hope as a pair that we can design something that actually resembles what our music video is going to be about. If the artwork is supposed to resemble what’s on the CD then in this case we’d be looking at avocados and Gucci sneaks. What we am trying to say here is that the album cover is very poor and shows no creativity and imagination.

On a more positive level, the Biffy Clyro Opposites album, does everything that the Falling in Reverses’ doesn’t. It actually resembles and makes sense. This album cover has been thought out and designed professionally, you can tell because when reading into it, it all links back to an opposite. Such as, the blue background doesn’t match the bare tree. As bear trees mean autumn, but the sky is bright blue, this being an opposite. Also the icicles in the shapes of dog bones. This wouldn’t usual go together but for the purpose of this album cover it fits together perfectly. The back of this album cover, is a more detailed version of the front cover. It shows the tree pointing down, this is upside –down, so therefore an opposite again. These are all classed as ‘Easter eggs”. This is something that you don’t notice until you are analysing them, like this. Just looking at these covers, they just seem like normal creative album digipak, they are, but when reading into them they have such much more meaning of them. People don’t just design thing the way they do ‘just because’ like my previous album cover from Falling In Reverse. Designers of these products give them meaning and symbolism, that will hopefully speak out to the fans, then this will make the fans by them etc.
