Record Label Analysis

This is a group of record labels that are associated with the genre of music that we are creating a music video with. Some of these labels are overall institutions that have little record labels within them. This is a label such as Sony; this record label has a flagship labels inside of them. A flagship is when an overall label has the important labels within them, these could be the labels that make up the most money. So within Sony there are RCA, Columbia and Epic records. Sony isn’t a specified label for a genre, it is a organization that has labels within it, these separate labels could be for different genres. The other type of record labels is an independent record labels. These are institutions labels that are effective without the help of major record labels. Most underground artists and bands begin on a independent maybe until they have reached a level of popularity that the label cannot provide for the band/artist anymore, they may need to be transferred to a more mainstream/major label so that they can be pushed more into the spotlight. I suppose an independent record label doesn’t have that many contacts, as a major label and this may be another reason why artists get ‘dropped’ and then founded by a more mainstream label.

Logo Analysis

These record labels are mainly for the ‘rock’ genre that we are covering.  As you can see these logos are dark, mostly black. Some are more brightly coloured than the other; this is mainly because they specialized type of rock. The Hopeless record label above does stand out more than the others because that logo has introduced the most colour. The Hopeless Records Label features more Pop Punk artists and bands. From this analysis, I have gathered that the more mellow bands are signed to a more colourful label. This will suggest that the darker label logos are more profound to sign heavier and darker bands. An example of this would be that All Time Low are signed to Hopeless Records, this band are very pop punk, and don’t have such meaningful lyrics as opposed to a darker band that are signed to Rise Records, Of Mice and Men for example. That band’s lyrics are more meaningful as you can see in my partner’s music video lyric analysis. The Fearless records label is a mixture of genres, example of this being that this being Breathe Carolina, as these are signed to Fearless even though their genre is Electronic Rock, but Fearless also sign a more heavier band such a blessthefall, as you can see from my other analysis’.

Record label logos in my opinion are open to interpretation, some things appear on them because of the genre of if they are in an independent label or not. Other things may appear on a record label logo because they are part of a flagship label and they needs to be some connection between the two, and by doing this they may add symbols or abbreviations to show the link.
